"I was born in 1963 and live in St Petersburg. My first solo show took place in 1996.
The scope of art activity is conceptual art. But as since the moment the term conceptual art appeared all art has become conceptual (free quotation), it should be specified: it is the one which photographs, texts, ideas, non-artistic objects, etc. uses as artistic material. In one word, installations. Not an exhibition of works, but a project. Not a photograph, but a part of the series. [The two last sentences should be read in an instructive tone with stern notes] I haven t got any art education. I ve got scholarship, when getting it I felt great interest in the school of Russian formalism , through it in Lotman and semiotics; while digesting them I started my art work at the interface between text and picture . Later I found out that I was engaged in conceptual art. I keep on doing it up to now. With a break for several years in the beginning of 2000s because of disappointment in my own art talent; the break finished when I realized the falseness of that disappointment: if there is no recognition, it doesn t mean that you should deprive yourself of the pleasure to create art. [Kind smiles in the audience.]
Social aspect plays a great role in my art work, as I m very interested in what is going on in the society. Moreover, other professional engagements (education science and work in NKO) are considered by me (not to the absurd level) as making Art, which objective is to bring harmony to the world. While going in for pure art I m in a constant search of new forms alongside with new ideas . I m afraid to become a slave of one style . During recent years I ve been trying to minimize the role of a verbal component.
My big hyper project is pursuing art by way of an interesting experiment or survival marathon, checking my own endurance as an artist: how long will I last or when will I have no kick left. I participate in exhibitions in Petersburg. Lately I haven t set a goal in front of myself to exhibit my works more often; peace of mind is more important (friendly, mutually responsible relations with representatives and directors of art institutions). I don t attend private views (of my own shows as well). I keep track of other artists work with great attention".
